How To Use The Lighthouse Database:

There are a number of ways to search the database:

  1. Click on the appropriate General Service Group in the left-hand "Services" column (Food, Housing, Necessities; Consumer Services; Criminal/Legal; Education; Environment; Health Care; Income Security; Individual and Family Life; Mental Health Care & Counseling; or Organizational/Community) if you know in which Category the service or provider you are searching is located. This will lead you -- from left to right across your computer screen -- to a list of Main Categories and Sub Categories in each General Service Group, and a list of locations on the Cape and Islands. Click the appropriate item in each box, then click on "Search" to return the list of providers and services meeting these criteria. If you are not sure of the town or location, you can click on a Map by clicking "Choose Location from a Map" instead of selecting a town in the last box.
We categorize each and every service or provider in the data according to this rather lengthy list of categories and criteria to meet national standards, so that our database can be integrated and utilized with other local, regional, state or national service databases in order to provide better information and service.
    ...OR...
  2. If you know the name or part of the name of the organization or provider you are searching for (for example, "Cape Cod Human Services" or "Provincetown AIDS Support Group"), type it in the "Search" box, and click the "Search" button.
    ...OR...
  3. Type a "key word" describing the type of service you are looking for in the "Search" box (for instance "substance abuse" or "HIV" or "food"), and click the "Search" button.
  4. ONCE YOUR SEARCH HAS RETURNED A LIST OF PROVIDERS OR SERVICES, CLICK ON THE "GO" BUTTON AT THE RIGHT OF EACH PROVIDER NAME TO GET ALL THE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROVIDER, including directions, hours, accessibility, phone, insurance/payment info, etc.

Also available online is a list of Hotlines that is included as an appendix in the directory.

Key Word Search Help
At its simplest, a query (keyword search) can be just a word or a phrase. But with the tips on this page, you can expand the focus of your search to give you more complete results.

Narrowing or Refining Your Key Word Searching
Use several Key Words together to get those records from the database that contain both words. For example:

"OR"

The Boolean OR command is used in order to allow any of the specified search terms to be present on the web pages listed in results. It can also be described as a Match Any search. You use the command like this:

ireland OR eire

"AND"

The Boolean AND command is used in order to require that all search terms be present on the web pages listed in results. It can also be described as a Match All search. You use the command like this:

clinton AND dole

"NOT"

The Boolean NOT command is used in order to require that a particular search term NOT be present on web pages listed in results. It can also be described as an Exclude search. You use the command like this:

clinton NOT dole

"NEAR"

The NEAR command is used in order to specify how close terms should appear to each other. You use the command like this:

moon NEAR river

Nesting "( )"

Nesting allows you to build complex queries. You nest queries using parentheses, like this:

impeachment AND (clinton OR johnson)
